Which Wooden Shelf Is Right for Your Space?
It's a question we get asked a lot, usually somewhere between "I love the wood" and "but which one do I actually need?" So here's the honest answer: it depends on what you want the shelf to do and how you want it to look once it's up. There are three options. Here's how to choose between them.
Flat Style Brackets
A single flat arm of steel, bent at a clean right angle, sits directly under the board. No diagonal support, no visible lip, just a simple, minimal line.
This is the most understated of our bracket styles. It reads almost like an extension of the shelf itself rather than a separate piece of hardware. If you want the timber to be the focus and the bracket to stay out of the conversation, this is usually the one.
Good for: modern interiors, narrower shelves, anywhere you want a slim, low-profile look.
L-Shape Brackets
Closely related to the flat style, but with a slightly different proportion, a narrower upright arm meeting a flat horizontal arm in a crisp right angle. Like the flat bracket, there's no diagonal strut here.
The L-shape gives a slightly more architectural feel than the flat bracket, with a touch more visual weight where it meets the wall. It's a quietly confident choice — practical, tidy, and it works well wherever you want clean lines without anything industrial-looking.
Good for: hallways, bathrooms, home offices, anywhere a tidy, no-fuss shelf is the goal.
Hanging Brackets
This style looks like the flat and L-shape brackets at first glance, but the front edge of the arm curls slightly upward, hooking under the board rather than just resting flat against it. That small curl gives the shelf extra grip and stability without needing a front-facing lip or a diagonal support.
It's a clever middle ground — visually simple, but engineered for a bit more security than a flat bracket alone.
Good for: shelves that will see regular use, kitchens, hallways, anywhere items get placed and picked up often.
So, Which One?
If you're still unsure, ask yourself three questions:
Do you want the bracket to blend in or stand out?
Flat Style Brackets keep things clean and understated. L-Shape Brackets add a subtle industrial touch, while Hanging Brackets become more of a design feature.
What will the shelf hold?
Light styling such as books, plants, and ornaments works well with all three. For heavier everyday use, L-Shape Brackets and Hanging Brackets offer extra support.
