What is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise is a business whose core mission is to benefit people and the planet.
There isn’t a single definition of a social enterprise but they all have the following characteristics:
Are driven by a clear social or environmental mission
Reinvest profits into the mission
Are independent of state or government control
Earn at least 50% of income through trading
Are transparent in the way they operate and the impact they have
Our Social Impact
The Wood Shack is one of seven social enterprises operated by JERICHO to help people who face real and significant challenges in getting a job. These could include trauma, insufficient work experience, health & wellbeing needs, education barriers and communication challenges.
We do this by giving them a real work opportunity and individualised support to ultimately help them progress into sustainable employment.
Last year, we supported 16 people including five survivors of modern slavery, 100% of those who completed their project progressed into a positive outcome and we generated an estimated £200,000 in social value.
Our Environmental Impact
We collect waste wood and save it from going to landfill.
Last year, 60% of the wood we collected was pushed up the waste hierarchy into reuse; used by the community for DIY/ building projects or as firewood, or made into a whole range of beautiful products from bird boxes to dining tables.
The other 40% was sent for recycling into woodchip, used in the manufacture of particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon neutral fuel in power stations.
In total, we rescued 532.8 tonnes of wood from the waste stream saving 265 tonnes of CO2.
